OUR STORY

When Galveston Island Meals on Wheels began in 1974, we delivered 10 meals a week to homebound seniors. In 2024, we served nearly 50,000 lunchtime meals, each delivered by our dedicated team of volunteers, to over 300 Galvestonians who are homebound and unable to prepare their meals due to illness, disability, or age. We serve all of Galveston Island from 1st Street to Terramar Beach.

In 2024, we celebrated 50 years of service and look forward to serving our homebound neighbors for another 50 years. The steadfast support from our community that has allowed us to serve every qualified applicant - regardless of their ability to pay.

ABOUT OUR PROGRAM

Nearly 90% of our meal recipients are unable to contribute toward the cost of their meals, yet no one is denied service due to an inability to pay. Despite rapidly rising food costs, government funds of any kind are neither used nor sought after, allowing our program to remain independent of funding that can be withdrawn and free of regulations that can become restrictive.

Many of our recipients live alone and their daily visit with our volunteers is often the only social interaction they have on a regular basis. Our volunteers deliver meals rain or shine, most holidays included. We are more than just a meal – so much more.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Because of generous donors, we never deny service to a qualified applicant due to an inability to pay for our service. A gift of just $30 provides a week of lunchtime meals for a homebound neighbor in need. Our online giving system makes it easy to set up recurring giving and support our recipients in need throughout the year. Each donation helps continue our mission to reduce food insecurity and social isolation among our homebound neighbors.
