OUR STORY

What began in 1974 as a simple act of service—delivering just 10 meals a week—has grown into a community-powered lifeline. In 2025, thanks to the generosity of donors and volunteers, Galveston Island Meals on Wheels delivered more than 51,000 nutritious meals to over 330 homebound neighbors. Each meal represents more than food—it’s safety, dignity, and human connection for seniors and adults who are unable to prepare meals due to illness, disability, or age.

In 2024, we celebrated 50 years of service and look forward to serving our homebound neighbors for another 50 years. The steadfast support from our community has allowed us to serve every qualified applicant - regardless of their ability to pay.

ABOUT OUR PROGRAM

Nearly 90% of our meal recipients are unable to contribute toward the cost of their meals—yet no one is ever denied service due to an inability to pay. While food costs continue to fluctuate, we do not use or seek government funding, allowing our program to remain independent of funding that can be withdrawn and free from regulations that can become restrictive.

Many of our recipients live alone, and their daily visit from a volunteer is often their only regular human connection. Our volunteers deliver meals rain or shine, including most holidays. We are more than a meal—we are safety, dignity, compassion, and community. We are so much more.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Because of generous donors, we never deny service to a qualified applicant due to an inability to pay for our service. A gift of just $30 provides a week of lunchtime meals for a homebound neighbor in need. Our online giving system makes it easy to set up recurring giving and support our recipients in need throughout the year. Each donation helps continue our mission to reduce food insecurity and social isolation among our homebound neighbors.
